In the very heart of St. Petersburg stands the exquisite Church of the Resurrection of Christ, also known as the Church of our Savior on the Spilled Blood. The ninth-domed temple was designed in Russian style to commemorate the memory of one of the most distinguished Russian emperors — Alexander II. The church was built on the very site, where on March 1, 1881, Alexander II was mortally wounded in the course of a terrorist attack. The funds used for temple’s construction were donated by people from all over Russia in honor of the Liberator Tsar.

A variety of finishing materials — brick, marble, granite, enamel, gilded copper and smalt — were used in the decoration of the Church. The walls and ceilings inside the church are completely covered in intricately detailed mosaics that occupy the area of about 7065 square meters. These unique mosaics were created according to the sketches of more than 30 artists, and represent one of the largest collections in Europe.
